I am always excited when I see updates to my favorite applications. I had one of those moments tonight when I noticed an update to TreoAlarm at mytreo.net’s download section. Software Trenches’ alarm app will not only wake you up, TreoAlarm will also deliver local weather report and 5-day forecast to your smartphone. TreoAlarm .99e incorporates the following changes:
• Moved hi-res icons to SD card
• Remove cursor from the weather text field
• Fixed (finally?) center button problem on Treo 650 (Great! I think this is what happened to trigger my Friday the 13th trouble)

Oh yeah - If you already downloaded it before I posted this, you may want to download and install it again since I was notified by the developer that a quick, minor update was released to update the version number on the app.

I have already downloaded and played with the new version including the new hi-res icons. It looks and operates awesomely. Although I have been playing with this app for awhile now, I think I am going to officially trash my copy of Bob’s Alarm for TreoAlarm. This is an app that is going on my personal Treo “Must Have” list.

We have just released Skinner 3.2. This time all the changes are solely in the Skinner Desktop application which has been updated to version 3.2 and features a lot of additional functionality.

Skinner Desktop is now able to insert a background image into any skin and provides import/export features for the dialpad area to aid you in external skin creation in e.g. Photoshop.

The update also includes a ten page PDF tutorial on how to create your own custom (backgrounded) skins, along with some sample files and project files for both Photoshop and GIMP. All these files are included in Skinner’s download and can be found in the SkinnerDesktop folder.

I found this site totally by accident, and didn’t know if the Mac users around here had heard of it. TreoMac lets the aforementioned users gather in a forum type environment to discuss and support the synergy of both pieces of technology as well as to act as a central resource.

At last minute, the wife and I decided to visit my “parental crew” at their cabin in northern Wisconsin. Problem is that there is no internet access for me up there - no dial-up, no data via my Treo - probably not even digital roaming. Yesterday I wound up being a little busy and I wasn’t able to update treo Addicts. Most of you probably don’t know this, but my wife is 20 weeks pregnant with our first baby. Yesterday we went to the clinic to have an ultrasound done, checking baby’s growth/health and to find out the sex.

Before I go any further, I should explain something about my family. I am first born, my father was first born, his father was first born and so on. We all have the same middle name and of course last name. So as part of a long family tradition, it is important for my first born to be a male. Not that I would have personally minded having a girl, but its just a family thing.

Well my family and I were extremely happy to find out that my first born will be a boy. I am very excited! My father and grandmother were extremely excited. It really made my grandmother’s day - 3 years after her husband (my grandfather) passed away, she finds that her great-grandson will carry on the family name and tradition.

So now the wife and I get to take a closer look at names, finally get to start baby registering, and can now start decorating the baby room.

I mention this on treo Addicts, not only because I’m an excited dad-to-be, but I also have found a great little piece of software for the Palm - HeyBaby by Wagware. If you or your spouse is expecting, I highly recommend this app. Although not very optimized for the Treo (no d-pad support) it is very handy.

Version 2.5 of the software features a Today view - which shows the baby’s current development progress; Baby Name Ideas - A list of over 1500 Baby Name ideas and an intergrated “Favorites” list; Chinese Birthing Chart - a fun tool that allows you to guess the sex of your baby - which if we calculated it correctly was wrong - it says the baby was supposed to be a girl; Glossary of Pregnancy terms; Ovulation Calculator; Baby Growth chart - Shows the estimated Weight and Length of Baby; Day Calculator - shows how far along the baby will be on a certain date; and Wives Tales - An integrated book of about 40 Wives Tales that is sure to crack you up. My favorite tale is “If your tummy itches, your baby will be extremely hairy.” You are also able to print from the favorites list and the today view.

palmOne and Telcel announced today the availability of the Treo 650 on Telcel’s network. Designed to work with Telcel’s EDGE network, the phone will have the standard compliment of applications and features.

“In today’s world, a smartphone has become an essential tool for mobile professionals to perform their daily activities,” said Miguel Hernandez, general manager of palmOne Mexico. Hernandez added that this new product is intended for all those professionals who need a device that enables them to keep in constant communication.

The Treo is now available in Mexico’s Distrito Federal and in the surrounding metropolitan area, and in coming weeks nationwide.

Yesterday, Mark/Space released an update to their popular Missing Sync for Palm utility. If you are not familiar with Missing Sync, it is a Macintosh replacement for Palm Desktop. Among other things, the latest release addresses issues with Mac OS X 10.4. Here is the changes from the release notes:

• Addressed issue where certain palmOne conduits were making calls to the SyncManager when they weren’t supposed to causing the UI to hang
• Hid .pkg extension and .rtf extensions for various files
• Addressed issue where sometimes Internet Sharing would not work under Tiger
• Addressed issue where FirstClass conduits did not load
• Addressed issue where mounting and the iPhoto plugin would fail under Tiger
