“I occasionally read about viruses attacking handhelds now so I started looking for an anti-virus software package for my 650. I found several for Pocket PC and Symbian but only one for Palm, Symantec Antivirus for Handhelds Annual Edition. After downloading it I tried to install it and it gave me an error message saying it couldn’t find the Palm directory and said to ensure that Hotsync Manager is installed. It is and I hotsync regularly. 3 hours of a run around by Symantec Support gave me no answers as the what the problem is. Anybody have an idea about what is wrong or where to find a better product? Do you recommend using an anti-virus software on it or not?”

Thanks Neal - I’m glad you brought this up! I remember when I first got my Treo 650, I was looking for the same thing and found the Symantec solution. Since I’m a Mac user, I can’t even try to install it. Fortunately a company is coming to our rescue - FB-4.
FB-4 recently brought their great virus scanning software, VirusGuard, to the Treo. Over the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of working closely with a couple of the crew at FB-4. I have been able to play and help with some pre-release versions as well as chat directly with the developer behind VirusGuard for the Treo. Let me tell you the software is great! It harnesses the Treo’s connectivity to provide updated virus definitions directly to the device. No windows only, no having to hotsync the defs. The interface is awesome. It even scans your internal memory after hotsyncs. Here is a list of its features:
- Easy-to-use interface
- Real-time Monitor scans upon any file system modification resulting from any file transfer (e.g., Bluetooth, desktop synch)
- On-demand scan of internal memory, memory card, and/or full device
- Autoboot when phone is restarted
- Subscription-based license, good for 1 year of virus updates
- Automatic Over-The-Air virus updates
- Auto-deletion of infected or suspicious files
- Full logging of scan and detection activity
- Full protection from the latest discovered viruses
You can get more information about VirusGuard and FB-4 at their website:

Thanks for the reply Shawn.
I have since purchased, downloaded and installed it. I found their website once before but it appeared they only had a Windows PC and Symbian product, no Palm so I blew it off. It’s already a lot less trouble than the Symantec one. When you talk to the developer ask him if are they big enough and committed enough to make new virus definitions available on a timely basis for the long haul.
Thanks,
Neal

Neal,
Shawn has asked me to answer your question. To address the issue of timely updates on new viruses, we have help with that. We work with a company, FRISK, that supplies us with virus definitions. They have been very reliable in this area. Also, the Palm version of VirusGuard was just released. Our customers have showed great interest in Palm versions of all our titles in the past 6 months. This led us to start development in this area in May. SMSGuard and PINGuard will be released for Palm in the next few months. Thanks for your support, and feel free to contact me if you have any other questions about VirusGurad or FB-4.
