Originally set to be announced later this afternoon at a live webcast, Palm has unveiled it’s new category of products - a mobile companion. The Foleo, a first of its new category, is a new device that interfaces with smartphones to help mobile users do more on the road. The main function of this device is to bring a bigger screen and full keyboard to your smartphone. When necessary a user will be able to whip this out and can instantly synchronize with his smartphone to do email, web browsing, document editing and even picture viewing. The unit sports a 10-inch screen, a full keyboard, bluetooth (for synchronizing with a smartphone), and WIFI to take advantage of hotspots and home or office wireless networks.

Palm has partnered with Opera to provide web browsing functionality and Dataviz (makers of Documents to Go) for office document editing.

The Foleo is set to be released this summer with a price tag of $499 after a $100 rebate.

Over seven years ago Palm introduced the MyPalm.com Portal as a web-based PIM, then put the kabash on it less then a year later. It looks as if Palm is reopening it as a new information, services, software and accessory store. The new site features a members only 24/7 support number, discounts on various software - including Astraware’s Sudoku for free, free shipping for members on various accessories, and specialized support for Palms. This support includes alerts for software upgrades for your Palm and some of its software. It seems that the new PalmBackup beta will be included as part of the services of MyPalm.

Right now the service is free (I wasn’t asked for a credit card during sign-up) and requires you to download a helper-app that allows you to download the free copy of Sudoku. The helper app looks like another Treo app based software store like Handmark’s InHand.

Palm just announced this morning the new addition to the Treo family - the Treo 755p! Almost exactly a year after the 700p was released, Palm introduces it’s successor. The new Treo has a lot of the same specs as the 700p but sports the new 680ish/750 design. Some of the new features include miniSD support, longer battery life, no antenna, and a few software changes. The mail program looks like it has been updated with a few new features, the Messaging app now threads picture mail along with text messages, a new multi - instant messaging program is included and Google Maps is now installed into the ROM as part of the default applications.
