You may have noticed things have been a little slow around tA. I recently spent a few days in the hospital with my wife. You may remember that we are expecting a little geek in October… well there wound up being a chance they the little tike was going to come a little early.
I took my wife to the hospital last week since she got really really sick from a nasty stomach flu. They found out pretty quickly that she was dehydrated and was having contractions. To make a long story short - we were fortunate that the doctors and nurses were able to nurse her back to health and get the contractions to stop. After a few days of sitting around and sleeping in a hospital recliner, I am happy to be back home.
My Treo was great to have with me - I kept family informed via email, txt messaging and calls. When I was bored I was able to play a few games or toss off a couple emails.

So on the subject of babies, daddies, and Treos - I wanted to point out a cool mobile site for expectant and new dads that I found recently on Treo Today. Its called Brand New Dad [mobile.brandnewdad.com], an online community, resource center and search engine for new and expectant fathers. The mobile site features a month to month set of articles for basics of taking care of a baby, a baby name finder (helpful since the wife and I still haven’t agreed on a name yet), a pregnancy calculator, a glossary and the ability to read recent forum posts. You can visit the full site at www.brandnewdad.com.
So now I have some catching up to do - my day job, treo Addicts and at home. Fun fun fun…

Engadget posted an article listing various mobile search engines including Google Mobile (My favorite) and Yahoo! Mobile. There is a few listed that I haven’t tried and I will definitely have to try out on my Treo.
“With all of the buzz surrounding mobile search, and Nokia’s release of their offering today, we thought it would be a good time to bring you a roundup of what’s out there in the mobile search space.”

PDA247 highlighted a mobile site yesterday. Wapipedia.org [wapipedia.org] is a mobile interface to wikipedia. I took a look at it on my Treo and personally I like Wapedia [pda.en.wapedia.org] better. The Wapedia seems more current with the Wikipedia then Wapipedia is. Try searching treo in both, Wapedia returns and updated entry, Wapipedia doesn’t even return a correct entry for the Treo.

BargainPDA pointed out that Google’s Mobile site (www.google.com/xhtml) added a new feature. The new “Mobile Web” feature, which is in beta, allows users to search just mobile sites.

We will name this our Mobile Site of the Day, while we are at it.

Greenlight Wireless announced yesterday the release of a new version of their Skweezer portal. Skweezer is a mobile site (one of our Mobile Sites of the Day) that optimizes web pages, searches, and email for use on PDA and phone browsers. New features include better optimization which speeds up browsing even more, a new interface, new mobile links directory listing and changes to the reformatting technology that make “skweezed” pages easier to view and support for form posting in double-byte language.
So point Blazer (or even Xiino) to skweezer.net and bookmark it. If you have already bookmarked it - move it to the first page of your bookmarks - better yet, set it as the default page. This is a essential mobile site for your Treo. If you are on a metered data plan, this mobile site could probably even save you money.

Today’s Freeware of the Day and today’s Mobile Site of the Day are inspired after my experience this week. I was sick most of the week with bad cold/flu then I landed myself in the emergency room yesterday afternoon. So today’s FWotD and MSotD are health related.
Finding a good mobile health related site was a little tougher. The pickings are kinda slim. But I did find an ok site - PocketDoctor [avantgo2.pocketdoctor.co.uk or wap.pocketdoctor.co.uk]. The site includes various features, some of which don’t seem to be complete but others that could be vary useful. Like the Health-E-Ref section, which is a complete medical encyclopedia. The DoctorQ section also seems like it could be helpful.

Mobile Site of the Day : BBR Mobile Speed Test [www.dslreports.com/mspeed] is a nice website to check download speeds from your mobile device through your provider. Provided by BroadBandReports.com, the tool allows you to check your download speed, download latency, download time, and compare it with other mobile users. The tool also lets you find out what your IP address is.
When I did the test at my office, I received 92 kbit/sec - 3.081s latency - and 20.345s d/l time. I am a Sprint user in the south-central Wisconsin area.

Mobile Site of the Day : Skweezer [www.skweezer.net] makes browsing and searching the Web on a PDA or smartphone faster, easier, and better. Skweezer optimizes Web content for your wireless-ready handset, reformatting Web pages so that they’re easier to view, load faster, and have a smaller file-size. There’s no software to download onto your device and it works on practically every PDA, smartphone, and XHTML-enabled cell phone that’s out there. And, since Skweezer is doing its work before the content is sent to your device, pages load faster and cost you less money to view. You can even sign up for a free account that will allow you to customize settings, save favorite “skweezed” pages and even check POP3 email accounts.

Mobile Site of the Day : If you don’t want to shell out $15 for QuickNews but still want to keep an eye on different news sources on your Treo, then check out Bloglines. Bloglines keeps track of your new news items and allows you to even read them from your Treo. Once you have set up an account on Bloglines, point your mobile browser to [bloglines.com/mobile].

Mobile Site of the Day : Going with the wireless theme of the FWotD, a great resource while you are on the road is JiWire’s WAP Hotspot finder: [wap.jiwire.com]. You can use your Treo’s Blazer (Web) app to view this site and find a close wireless hotspot. Otherwise you can also subscribe to the free JiWire Avantgo channel also.
